The 39 Steps at THEATREWORKS
A mysterious woman collapses on a man sitting in an armchair, a map in her hand, a knife in her back. Her dying words refer to 39 Steps and an obscure site in Scotland--Alt na Shellach. Richard Hannay, the man in the armchair, is now a man on the run, and his subsequent adventures propel him at high speeds in police cars, under trains and across the rugged moors, handcuffed to a woman (another lovely, mysterious creature), in search of a sinister villain with a missing little finger. This is the stuff of mystery, romance, thrills and high comedy. This is Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, not the classic movie, but the play, presented at THEATREWORKS running September 15-October 9 at the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater in Colorado Springs.
The 39 Steps, adapted from the movie by Philip Barlow, is more of less faithful to the classic 1935 Hitchcock movie, which is somewhat faithful to John Buchan’s classic spy novel of 1915. The great difference is that the stage version is performed entirely by four actors, moving at dizzying speeds to re-create the swiftly plotted suspenseful tale. The result is not only thrills, chills, and spills, but some of the most hilarious comedy of recent times.
At THEATREWORKS The 39 Steps will arrive in style. The cast of Josh Robinson, Lindsay Roe Taylor, Sammie Joe Kinnett, and Justin Walvoord will deliver a completely populated world moving very rapidly across vast acres of Scotland before coming to a thrilling climax in the Royal Albert Hall. Geoffrey Kent directs. The lighting is by Jane Spencer, the scenery by Roy Ballard, and the sound design is by Brett Christopherson. The costumes flying on and off are by Jan Avramov.
Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps plays Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. from September 15th through October 9th in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater. There are 2:00 p.m. Saturday matinees September 24, October 1 and 8, and 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon performances September 18 and 25 and October 2 and 9.
The 39 Steps is sponsored by Carnick & Company.
