I never found the stage manager's line patronizing, but it was one of the lines that bothers me, since one of the women drops dead at a rather early age. I think Mrs. Gibbs would happily have traded that for a nervous breakdown.

Amen. At least Mrs. Gibbs got twenty years of dishes in before she went up to join Simon Stimson on the hill. That's still a lot of dishes, though maybe not nearly enough
